Album Review When Florida attorney Jack Thompson declared war on Luther Campbell, the 2 Live Crew, and Luke Records (formerly Luke Skyywalker Records) in 1989 and claimed that their X-rated rhymes were in violation of American obscenity laws, he didn't put them out of business. All he succeeded in doing was making Campbell a poster child for the First Amendment and helping him sell even more albums and singles. When Campbell launched his solo career with I Got Shit on My Mind in 1992, it was obvious that he wasn't about to clean up his act -- this CD is every bit as rude, crude, and X-rated as anything that he had done with the 2 Live Crew. On raunchy, sexually explicit offerings like "Head Head and More Head" and "Menage a Trois," Campbell seems to be thumbing his nose at his adversaries by being as offensive as possible. And those adversaries not only include Thompson and various church groups -- they also include other rappers. I Got Shit on My Mind finds Campbell attacking everyone from N.W.A. on "Fakin' Like Gangsters" to Kid 'n Play on "P____ A__ Kid and H__ A__ Play." Overall, this CD is quite entertaining -- that is, if you have a taste for X-rated humor. Campbell has often described himself as a rap version of Richard Pryor or Andrew Dice Clay, and anyone who finds those comedians amusing is likely to see the entertainment value in the rapper's booty rhymes. Those who are don't care for that type of humor won't. I Got Shit on My Mind isn't quite as essential as the 2 Live Crew's best releases, but it's a guilty pleasure that Campbell's hardcore fans will enjoy.
Biography Otherwise known as Luther Campbell, the entrepreneur and head of 2 Live Crew since its inception in the mid-'80s, Luke is a solo project for Campbell apart from his group's releases. The first release as Luke is 1992's I Got S___ On My Mind, after that 1993's In the Nude, was followed by an X-rated Christmas album and a greatest-hits LP before the project signed a contract with Island for 1997's Changin' the Game. Luke's Freak Fest 2000 followed three years later; Somethin' Nasty appeared in spring 2001.
A lil' somethin' about me:
After years of collecting South & West Rap cd's I decided to sell almost everything from my collection !! All of my cd's are original and almost brand new (maybe a minor scratch hear and there - but that's on app. 5 out of 100 cd's). Well, all I can say is too bad I'm doing this, but hey - all good things come to an end, right? And if U got some questions, go 'head and hit me up! Oh, I almost forgot...all my cd's are PARENTAL ADVISORY versions, so don't worry about those clean versions!
