There is so much to this antique publication that it will provide pleasant reading for hours. This is a September, 1906 McClure's Magazine with an illustration, "The Prospector", by N.C. Wyeth.

Apparently, this publication had dual purposes. The first purpose was to entertain with short stories, history articles and articles about the upcoming machine age. The N.C. Wyeth cover illustrates a dying culture with the encroachment of civilization heading west. Perhaps that is why the article is named, "Montana - The Last Stand", in association with Wyeth's cover. There is a second print inside the magazine that shows the "Prospector" in a different pose. There are also articles and stories by some of the better authors of the time, but more on that later.

The other purpose of this magazine was to advertise goods and services as an early catalogue would. Inside these pages are many ads for private schools and colleges, food products of the time, guns that were ordered by mail order, clothing ads for suits and shoes and the most fascinating of all, the early American automobile ads for 1906 and 1907. Some of the names included here are Studebaker (wagons), REO Cars, Pope Tribune Automobiles, the 1907 Cadillac, the Autocar, the Rambler, the Mitchell, the Aerocar, The Royal, The Babcock Electric Car and Franklin Cars. Keep in mind that this was all before the Ford and Chevrolet. It's fascinating and it gives us a glimpse of time past.

In addition to the car ads, there are gun advertisements for Remington Autoloading Shotguns, Smith & Wesson "Hammerless" Safety Revolvers, .38 Caliber Colt "Marine Corp's" Model, U.M.C. Arrow Shells, Iver Johnson Automatic Safety Revolvers, Daisy Air Rifles and Marlin Firearms Co. Model 16 Light Weight 16-Gauge Shotguns.

Now to the literature in order of the table of contents...

01. The Prospector - cover illustrated by N.C. Wyeth
02. The Story Of Montana by C.P. Connolly with a separate untitled print (see photo). This article is about the treasure of Butte Hill and the development of the great copper industry. Also illustrated with photographs.
03. The Trader of Last Notch by Perceval Gibbon.
04. Niagara by Eugene Wood, which is illustrated with tinted photographs of the great falls.
05. Some Benevolent Assimilation by James Hopper with illustrations by W. Hatherell, R.I.
06. Robin Goodfellow - His Friends by Rudyard Kipling. (This is part 5 of a serial Kipling wrote for the magazine.) With illustrations by Andre Castaigne and Frederic Dorr Steele.
07. B. Jones, Butcher by Samuel Hopkins Adams.
08. A Royal Romance by C.N. and A.M. Williamson about the royal romance between Alfonso XIII of Spain and Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg in 1906 with photos of the relationship including a photo of Alfonso in an early car and he was known as "the demon motorist" for his love of speed.
09. Young Corey's Chance by Viola Roseboro'
10. The Story Of Life Insurance, Part 5 (The Thirty Years War illustrated with portraits), by Burton J. Hendrick.
11. The Three Wise Men by John T. McIntyre, illustrated by L. Raven Hill.
12. The Mountain God by Florence Wilkinson, a poem.

Now there are 130 pages of advertising in this book. In addition to what I've mentioned there are also full page ads for Edison and Victor phonographs. There are approximately 110 pages of features that I've listed from the table of contents. Plus you have the inside and outside covers. So a close total would be 240 pages. Then add about ten appendix pages.

The condition of the magazine is old. It is from 1906, after all. In early magazines such as this, pages were often not cut properly after the press run, so the pages are a little uneven. There are tears on four pages near the center where somebody had crudely tried separating those pages that were probably not cut properly in the printing process and were stuck together. However, those pages are still intact and weren't torn out. They are just ragged on the edges. The cover slightly overlaps the content inside it. The spine is strong, but the cover is slightly lose from it. There is a pencil doodle on the front cover that appears to have been drawn by a child. This is erasable as it is in pencil.

If you have any questions, drop me an e-mail and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Dimensions of this item are approximately: 10 and 1/16 inches long, 6 and 15/16 inches wide and about a 1/2 inch in thickness. Weight with packaging is 1 pound 10 ounces. This item ships USPS Priority Mail - insurance included. Multiple orders can be combined to reduce shipping charges. Due to the weight of this item, it can't be sent First Class Mail, which has a limit of 13 ounces. Media Mail is not an option for sending antique publications and is notoriously slow. Parcel Post is only $0.25 to $0.50 cheaper than Priority Mail.

A: Sure, but keep in mind that this item could take up to ten business days to arrive to you. Media Mail is notoriously slow. As an example, I sent a package via Media Mail across my state and it took over two weeks. That was a... Continue reading
