Skink Pinhole Pancake Creative Kit for Leica M

The modular Skink Pinhole Pancake System is the ideal addition to your rangefinder camera and offers new creative opportunities to the Leica enthusiast. Pinhole disks, zone plates or zone sieves - also in combination with suitable filters can easily be swapped and installed between the retaining rings in the center of the Pancake lens.

Depending on the desired effect, you can use your camera as a pinhole-, zone plate- or zones sieve camera. To a high degree the installed aperture determines how your vision is creatively interpreted in rendering an image. The traditional pinhole creates relatively sharp images with exposure times ranging from one second to several minutes. With a zone plate or zone sieve however, photos can be taken without a tripod, if the lighting conditions permit higher speeds. In comparison, images turn out softer with a painterly, impressionists' character. Highlight are emphasized and appear with a dreamy halo-effect, while darker areas seem to be pushed into the background.

With a focal length of 24mm the resulting angle of view corresponds to that of a 24mm Elmarit lens. Unlike, when using glass lenses, light meets the film surface or camera sensor in a pure unmanipulated way when it travels through a pinhole.

In architectural photography converging lines can be avoided and the pinhole renders wide angle images with a soft timeless character. The resulting retro effect is emphasized by mild vignetting at the corners of the image. Although the pancake lens reaches deep into the camera, on the surface it is only 3mm high. The camera can easily fit into a pocket.

Skink Pinhole Pancake

The Skink Pinhole Pancake which is offered here, is handmade using high quality material.

Material: 316L jewelry grade stainless steel (nickelfree)
with universal closure (center screw ring) for swapping pinholes, zone plates and zone sieves
Maximum diameter of aperture disks: 20mm
Focal length: 24mm
Angle of view with film: 84°
Pinhole size: 0.2mm (nominal 218µm according Lord Rayleigh formula)
Aperture: f/110

By reversing the center rings (installing upside down) the focal length will be extended to 30mm which results in:

Focal length: 30mm
Angle of view with film: 71°
Pinhole size: 0.2mm (nominal 244µm according Lord Rayleigh formula)
Aperture: f/123

When using Leica type cameras with M39 thread, the pancake can directly be mounted onto the camera. For Leica M and compatible cameras the adapter ring which is included in this kit needs to be attached to the pancake.

The Skink Pinhole Pancake with the included adapter can be used with
many cameras. Please refer to the compatibility chart below.

The Pinhole

is made of 0.03mm thin black stainless steel foil, for easy handling sandwiched between two copper plates with 20mm diameter. The laser drilled pinhole is perfectly round.

with moderate glow-effect was individually exposed on high-contrast film. For protection it is laminated and sandwiched between two copper plates with 20mm diameter.
