With a pair of reunion shows of surviving Grateful Dead members slated for August 2002, the timing couldn't have been better for Phil Lesh's solo debut THERE AND BACK AGAIN. Enlisting the aid of Allman Brother/Gov't Mule guitarist Warren Haynes, Aquarium Rescue Unit fretman Jimmy Herring, Zen Trickster keyboardist Rob Barraco, and Bruce Hornsby drummer John Molo, Lesh has unleashed a debut sure to be embraced by rock fans of all ages. With longtime Dead lyricist Robert Hunter kicking in quite a few contributions, an optimistic mood bubbles over throughout, ranging from "Celebration" (with Haynes playing David Lindley to Lesh's Jackson Browne) to the upbeat stroll "Rock-n-Roll Blues."
Haynes' contributions particularly stand out on both of his self-penned contributions; a tragic tale of fame gone awry ("The Real Thing") and an inspirational reaction and tribute to the late Jerry Garcia ("Patchwork Quilt"). Garcia is also represented by a remake of the Dead rarity "Liberty," a rollicking number reminiscent of vintage Little Feat thanks to Haynes's biting slide guitar.
