This exquisite copper engraving with hand coloring, is the first comprehensive work on Bird of Paradise & Hummingbirds or Trochlidae. It precedes Gould ’s work by 20 years. The inspiration for the work was Lesson’s voyage on la Coquille, during which he studied these fascinating creatures in the wild. The drawings are by Prêtre and Bévalet, the best French natural history artists in of the day. We are pleased to offer a selection of plates from this work. The condition of these prints is very good, on strong paper that is toned. The hand colouring is superb and each print measures approx. 5 1/2 inches x 8 3/4 inches. Please review pictures carefully as they are quite accurate.
