This profusely-illustrated 8 1/2"x11" publication is a Special Issue (Vol.17, Nbr.4, 4th Qtr 1985) of MARQUEE®, the journal of the Theatre Historical Society of America. The entire issue is on the beautiful TIVOLI THEATRE, located at 63rd and Cottage Grove in Chicago.
It is 40 pages and filled with numerous large archival photographs and detailed history of this beautiful movie palace, which closed in 1963 and was demolished. Included with the issue is a 17" by 22" insert of a TIVOLI operating budget page from 1929 on one side and period theatre advertisements on the other.
Opened in 1921 by the Balaban & Katz amusement chain, and designed by renowned theatre architects Rapp & Rapp, the TIVOLI was very large, seating 3,414, yet gave patrons an intimate feel. The French decor, inspired by the chateau at Versailles, was clean and classical, never overdone. Sixteen months in construction, the theatre was said to cost more than $2 million.
