Longtime Phish cosmic cohort and collaborator The Dude Of Life (Steve Pollak) makes his second zany splash with UNDER THE SOUND UMBRELLA. While his jam-rock buddies infuse the music with their characteristic happy-go-lucky feel, The Dude's self-penned imagery often takes a more rough-cut turn.
Imagine a four-dimensional art gallery crammed with bizarre portraits-on the walls, on the floor, and even on the ceiling. Pipe in Trey Anastasio's eloquent glad-rock electric guitar. The descriptions of poor, vomiting "Francella" or the nasty demise of Patrick the "Tow Truck Driver" quickly take on a curious, fun quality. Such tunes as "Come On Up To My Room" carry a sweet little funk groove with relatively minimal harmonic action, while the aforementioned Patrick's theme takes more angular turns. It's all very groovy and strange, with the latter quotient fully represented by "Puppydog Named Madness," a lilting dirge about, well, just that. The Dude's rather pedestrian voice only makes him a freakier master of ceremonies.
