Pied Billed Grebe. 82

Information:  Johann Seligmann created this wonderful folio work featuring the art of both George Edwards and Mark Catesby.  Entitled Verzameling van Uitlandsche en Zeldzaame Vogelen, the rare work features beautiful engravings and original hand coloring.  Seligmann re-engraved the plates of both Edwards and Catesby.  Verzameling was published in Amsterdam between 1772 and 1781. 

Mark Catesby is considered the "Founder of American Ornithology”.  Catesby is also noted for creating the first work featuring both American flora and native wildlife.  His work greatly inspired Audubon and Linnaeus, and expanded the knowledge of the New World.

 

George Edwards is noted in history as the "Father of British Ornithology."  Edwards art is well loved, and he is one of the most important orinthological artists of his time.
