Phil Woods is one of the oldest living jazz greats at the time of this production, and his career has been a long, star-studded, and hugely influential one. A master of the bebop saxophone, he has been remarkably creative and productive throughout his career, and has worked with such top performers as Charlie Barnet, Jimmy Raney, George Wallington, the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra, Buddy Rich, Quincy Jones, and Benny Goodman. In this intimate portrait of a legend, Phil provides insight into his successful musical history, telling stories about his relationship with Bird and Dizzy, as well as his wonderful marriage of thirty years. Filmed on location in the Poconos while Phil and his band rehearse a selection of music by Quincy Jones--which is also featured in the documentary--Phil discusses issues of music education and up and coming young jazz artists, as well as his mentors such as Benny Goodman. A fascinating document that will compel fans and newcomers alike, A LIFE IN E FLAT presents a charming, humorous, and honest artist in his element.
