The Seamstress

* * Original, First publication of This Short Story! * *

Jane C. Campbell

1848

DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION:

This is an original short story, published in an 1848 issue of The Union Magazine of Literature and Art. It is 6 pages long and has one vignette (in-text illustration). It is NOT the entire issue of the magazine.

A wonderful, historic item, a well-written and intriguing lesson in pridefulness. The story is about a young woman of means whose father, who always loved her too much to see her faults, realizes the full extent of his daughter's pride when he hears her speak contemptuously of an old seamstress. He tells his daughter a story about some neighbors of theirs who once lived in a majestic house, of his relationship to them, of the true background of his wife, the girl's mother, and of course, of their connection to the seamstress. This is an original publication, 160 years old, NOT A REPRINT.

Documentation of the source of this essay will be included.

The item is in very good condition, no markings, no writing or underlining, no odors. The pages came from a bound magazine, and one of the vertical sides shows evidence of this once having been bound--namely stitching holes. The pages are evenly tanned with age. There are small, scattered areas of foxing (little brown age spots that appear on paper). The pages measure approximately 6-1/4" x 9-1/2" (15,8 x 24,5cm). This was printed in 1848, almost two decades before the U.S. Civil War broke out, and the paper is still supple, not fragile or brittle. You won't be disappointed!
