DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION:This is an original, antique magazine article from a 1881 issue of Scribner's Monthly. It is NOT the entire issue of the magazine. The article is 5 pages long and has 3 illustrations. It discusses the works artist JULES BASTIEN LEPAGE [1848-1884], French realist painter of rustic outdoor genre scenes, widely imitated in France and England. A museum is devoted to him today at Montmédy.
The author of this article, RICHARD WATSON GILDER (1844–1909) was an American editor and poet, b. Bordentown, N.J. In 1869 he became an editor of the magazine Hours at Home, which merged with Scribner's Monthly in 1870. Just before Scribner's became the Century, Gilder succeeded J. G. Holland as its editor (1881), a position he retained until his death. The Century was a leading publication during his life.

The item is in very good condition, no markings, no writing or underlining, no odors, no wear. The pages came from a bound magazine, and one of the vertical sides shows evidence of this once having been bound--namely stitching holes along the edge . The pages are evenly tanned with age. There is no foxing. The pages measure approximately 6-1/2" x 9-3/8". the article was printed in 1881 and the paper is still supple, not fragile or brittle. You won't be disappointed!
