History
The Shillelagh was one of the preferred weapons in faction fighting. In Ireland the usual venues for faction fighting were horse fares, race meetings and the likes. On some occasions there could be as many as a couple of hundred people on each opposing side. The most famous fare of all was held at Donnybrook county Dublin and was last held in 1855. The word Donnybrook is now included in the American dictionaries and is a word for a brawl or fight mainly between a large group of people.
