You are bidding on a terrific early flashlight which is related to Mining industry, with a nameplate which approves design by "UNITED STATES BUREAU OF MINES" Early flashlight came out of a collection of Mining Relics collected in Arizona's Cochise County (Bisbee-Tombstone Region) which included old tags, candlesticks, carbide lamps, etc. When I first saw flashlight...I thought it looked great...CASE IS SOLID SWIRLED BAKELITE..but I failed to make the mining connection until I read the nameplate (see images 2, 4 and 11)...then a light bulb went on. Critical to MINING SAFETY is "no spark"...which this bakelite flashlight would allow...both ends are bakelite on bakelite meaning no metal connections. Amazing antique flashlight is 8" long x 2 5/8" at lens end, x 1 5/8" at the other end. Case is solid brown fancy swirled BAKELITE (or similar, catalin, et al) with black bakelite end...even the on off switch is bakelite. Old flashlight is complete, there are no cracks or chips in bakelite, only a tiny little crack in glass lens (which is hardly noticeable...this would be so easy to replace)..the on off switch moves nicely. I do not have batteries to test this, but it still has original bulb. Writing on black bakelite cap says "STEWART A. BROWNE MFG CO, N.Y.C. TUFFLITE PAT. PEND." (good view image #9) Writing on brass nameplate says "PERMISSABLE ELECTRIC FLASHLIGHT UNITED STATES BUREAU OF MINES (pictorial of American Eagle) SAFETY APPROVED MINERAL INDUSTRIES APPROVAL NO. 606 APPROVED FOR SAFETY IN METHANE AND AIR MIXTURES ISSUED TO THE STEWART R. BROWNE MFG CO INC NEW YORK N.Y. CLASS 1, GROUP D MODEL F-81 SAFETY FLASHLIGHT UL" This old miner's flashlight is collectible on so many levels...it has a solid bakelite case...displays wonderfully...is complete...mining related...old "pegged brass" nameplate is intact and fully readable...used in Arizona mining town. Fantastic old Flashlight. Seems complete, but again, I have NO IDEA what batteries would have been used back in year of this old pc. Thanks so much for looking....collect and invest in history!!!!! Tangible assets are always the best ones.
