FAQ:

What is the development of ancient chinese lock?
Primitive human beings that lived in caves learned to block the cave openings with heavy rocks to protect themselves and their belongings from the attack of beasts. This could very well be the earliest and most direct primitive installation for security.
?????? With the advancement and development of new materials and tools, the types of security installation gradually increased and the functions upgraded. The Chinese ancestors ties knots with ropes solidly and used a "si" (tooth of the beast) to undo the knots. In broader terms, the knots were used as the earliest locks in ancient China and "si" could be referred to as the earliest key in China.
Some locks were not equipped with the substantial functions of a lock. They were designed with patterns of the shapes of fierce-looking animals; for instance, a tiger, to scare the thieves away. It is called a "scaring lock" with only symbolic function.
Wooden lock is the most substantial type of early locks. Its history can be traced back to the society of slavery in the Stone Age. It is said the earliest wooden locks were found at the ruins of the Yang-Shao Culture. However, none of them is preserved until today, nor are they ever mentioned in official document. The mechanism of primitive wooden locks is very simple. A hole on the door allows a pole-shaped tool to enter from outside to lock or unlock the wooden bolt on the inside. It also explains why the keys were called "tube" or "si" in the Spring and Autumn Period (700-403 BC). Wooden locks were much improved in the Warring States Period (700-221 BC). A hole can be found on the wooden bolt that locks the door and two circular pegs were fixed horizontally in the hole. The keys at this time were made of bronze.
The simple and plain bronze locks appeared in the Bronze Age. A thin, flat piece of spring can be found in the lock. The geometric relativity and the bouncing effect between the key and the spring were the mechanism designed for locking and unlocking. The design of locks got more complicated in the Spring and Autumn Period, some locks were designed with secret mechanism inside. As for why were the locks commonly used at that time, people believed it had to do with the improvement made on manufacturing the locks by Ru-Ban in the Warring states Period.
The application of large quantity of metal locks started in the last year of Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD), with bronze as the major material. Designs with patterns of creatures like kirins, butterflies, tigers, panthers, ??? etc. could be seen on the lock. Locksmiths' technology level was at its peak in Tang Dynasty, more metal flat-piece springs were used, mostly made with bronze, plus other materials like copper, iron, silver, or gold. The forms and engravings on locks were getting diversified, too. Locks and keys from this period are beautiful with an artistic touch and they presented themselves in tens of thousands of different shapes.
Locks and keys were also symbol of the rich and the powerful. High rank officials and members of rich families engraved beautiful patterns on them. Some of them even bear totems. While at the same time, poor people used only wooden locks. Furthermore, they could tell whether a woman is married or single simply by seeing if she carried a key when she went out. Married women were the so-called "key-carriers" and unmarried women were called "non key-carriers" as they did not carry keys by themselves when they went out. ??????
From Han Dynasty on (~200B.C.), metal splitting spring padlocks have always been the most widely used major types of locks by Chinese people. Though the shapes of ancient Chinese locks diversified, the inner structures and configurations have not changed much for thousands of years. These locks faded gradually only after the western latch-locks were introduced into the country in the 1940s.
Linguistic Origin of the Ancient Locks
??????Locks, in today??s perspective, are security devices operated by keys, rotating plates, buttons, circuits or other mediums which are used to keep certain objects from being opened or taken away. Locks are endowed with functions of protection, management, even of decoration. Over the centuries, locks have been entitles to different names and definitions with literature from all different dynasties in ancient China .
