Synopsis
In this study of race and ethnic relations during and after World War I, Richard Slotkin contrast the wartime and peacetime experiences of the heroic soldiers of the 369th infantry (the famous Harlem Hellfighters, comprised of African American soldiers) as well as the 77th Division's "lost battalion" (made up of immigrants from the New York City area), which became isolated and trapped behind enemy lines, suffering many losses. He tells how, on their return home, they encountered an America that, despite all they had done, was not yet ready or willing to accept African Americans and immigrants as full members of society. Slotkin provides compelling battle scenes along with trenchant social commentary.
