This quartet combines the sound of late-'90s alt-rock with a quirky, restless energy that harks back to '80s new wave without indulging in retro leanings. Unrelenting but not overwhelming rhythms and snaky, intertwining guitars mix with simple, repetitive keyboard lines and underplayed vocals throughout WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE. The lyrics are full of self-referential irony and delivered with enough disaffection and attitude to set off the hipster alarm, but the tunes are too tightly arranged and the songs too melodic and carefully composed for anyone to cry "slacker." Imperial Teen isn't trying to be anyone's bedroom artistes, it's aiming squarely at the pop crown.
