A famous journalist describes conditions and events in England, Germany, France, Spain and Italy between March, 1938 and March, 1939, as Europe hurtled towards World War II.

England, France and most other European democracies couldn't bring themselves to recognize Germany's intentions - the Great War was only twenty-years in the past. Nor could they see the real menace in Nazism: after all, Spain had saved the Church from the Reds and Mussolini made the trains run on time.

And America was determined to be neutral. It was that isolationism Sheehan hoped to dispel with this book.
