He was a stranger to all the social workers, although one week earlier he had called on Kate Weatherly, deputy director of a London East End Settlement, apparently to seek help from the Citizens Advice Bureau. He had given the name of the husband she had left years ago. The police were understandably suspicious now that he was found dead at her door, curled in the gutter.

What was the connection between kate's husband and this unkown junkie? Were they one and the same? Kate insisted they weren't if only because their eyes were a different color, but there was only her word for it. And the reasons for which she lad left her husband without divorcing him meant that now, nearly ten years later she had a strong motive for killing him. Kate has to trace the husband with whom she had delibetately lost all contact, or identify the mysterious young man. Her inquiries put her life in danger for someone wanted kate dead, and it looked as it it must be one of those she trusted most.
