  What Is a Terrarium?

How To Successfully Make A Miniature Garden.
Copyright© 2001 - 2009 DoPlastic
Terra means earth and arium means home. This beautifully designed terrarium will enable you to create a landscape in miniature, to express your own creativity, to watch the growth of greenery under plastic, and to enhance the decor of you home or office. It will provide you with an educational window on how nature and hours of enjoyment with gardening hobby.

You do not need special skills-for the terrarium itself solves the problem of over-heated homes and air-pollution. The Acrylic lets in light. Moisture evaporates from the soil and leaves, condenses on the sides of the terrarium, runs back down to the soil, and is recycled by the plants. The garden will last indefinitely as the secret of its success lies in the constant humidity and the stable interior temperature maintained in a terrarium.

THE MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED

The materials and plants you will need for your terrarium are readily available at nurseries, florists, grocery, department and variety stores.
The planting area should be one-fourth the height of the terrarium. It is made up of a layer of drainage material, a layer of sphagnum moss, a layer of charcoal chips, and a layer of potting soil. (See illustration below).

Drainage Material: (Slightly less than 1/3 of the planting area). This will keep your soil clean by allowing the water to filter as it drains. While pebbles or a mixture of sand and gravel are preferable, you may also use aquarium gravel, broken clay pots, or Styrofoam chips.

Sphagnum Moss: (A very thin layer).
Sphagnum moss helps keep the soil from seeping into the drainage layer below. Sphagnum moss, if purchased in dried form, must be prepared for use by soaking overnight and squeezing out the excess moisture the next day. Peat moss or dear leaves may also be used.

Charcoal Chips: (A thin layer).
This is a soil sweetener and will prevent the soil from smelling sour. Cooking charcoal broken into small pieces may also be used.

Potting Soil: (Slightly more than 2/3 of the planting area). Commercial soil is readily available and is free from pests. If you wish to prepare your own soil, it should consist of 1/3 coarse sand, 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 good garden loam and a little perlite. In addition to the soil that you need to prepare the basic planting area, you will want enough soil to create hills, terraces, ridges, or central knolls for landscaping interest. Be sure to allow for this.

Ground Cover:
Tiny Plants such as sheet moss or oxalis. See the section on plants.

Decorations:
To enhance your landscape, you will want to add suitable decorations such as: large stones, driftwood, mineral specimens, shells, coral, pieces of mossy logs, twigs, tiny animals, or toys. Use your artistic ingenuity.

Useful Tools: (Can be found around your home).
Long sticks such as:bamboo sticks, 1/4 or 3/8 inch dowels, chop sticks, plastic straws, or knitting needles are useful for digging holes, moving things around, or propping up plants. If you add a cork to one end, you will have a good soil tamper. Scissors for pruning. Mister or atomizer or window cleaning bottle for gentle watering. A kitchen bulb blaster is useful for directing water to hard-to-reach areas. Artists or bottle brush to clean soil from sides of terrarium and from plants, Iced tea spoons or small rakes will be helpful.

SELECT YOUR PLANTS

Look for plants especially developed for terrariums. Remember that some of your very own house plants may be used in your terrarium, for greater interest, look for a mixture with variety in height, color, and texture. Choose small plants to give special accent, medium plants for color and shape and tall plants for drama and focal points. Plants that love high humidity and constant moisture will do the best in terrariums. Buy healthy plants with uniform green leaves. Avoid plants with signs of insects or deformed shapes. Be sure the plants you select are compatible as to the amount of water or light needed. You can combine moisture loving plants with those that are semidry, such as cacti or succulents should not be mixed with the others. Your florist, nursery, variety store, department store, etc., will guide you.

GETTING READY

Decide on where you will place your Terrarium. Good, indirect light such as a north window or through a lightweight curtain is the rule. AVOID DIRECT SUNLIGHT because it magnifies as it passes through plastic, raises the interior temperature and can scorch your plants. Do not place your terrarium near a heat outlet. However, your terrarium can be used in a dark room with a fluorescent strip or a lamp as its source of light if the light is on at least fifteen hours a day. Because of its pedestal or tray, your terrarium gives you much flexibility within the decor of your room.
Gather all your plants and tools on a large sheet of paper or plastic. When you have finished planting your terrarium, just roll up the sheet with all the messy leftovers.
Take into consideration how your terrarium will be viewed. While the plants are still in their pots, try several different ways of grouping them. Your tall plant should be the focal point. Work the rest of the plants around it for the most Interesting arrangement. Be sure the terrarium is dry before you begin planting or the soil will cling to the sides and be difficult to clean.

PLANTING

In order to receive the plants, you must first prepare the basic planting area. Remember that the basic planting area should reach one-fourth the height of the terrarium. The first to go into the terrarium is the drainage material of pebbles or sand and gravel. This will be slightly less than 1/3 of the basic planting area. Cover the drainage material with a very thin layer of sphagnum moss which was prepared in advance. Next, put in the layer of charcoal chips for your soil sweetener. Lastly, add your potting soil. Plant one plant before unpotting another to keep the roots from drying out. It's easiest to plant the smallest plants first then the medium, large, and lastly the ground cover. Leave open spaces for growth. After all the plants are firmly in place, add your decorative accents.
With a pointed stick or iced tea spoon, dig a hole where the plant is to go. Remove the plant from it's pot by firmly striking the pot against a hard surface to dislodge the soil back around it's roots. Plant the remaining plants in the same manner. Because the top of the terrarium is removable this makes it easy for planting.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

After the planting is completed, give the garden it's first watering. It is best to use water that has been allowed to come to room temperature. Do not use a softened water or tap water that contains to many chemicals as it may be harmful to your plants. Bottled water is preferable. Use an atomizer or mister to gently water your plants and to avoid soaking. Overwatering is dangerous to your garden. If the plants need more water, they will drop or show other signs of thirst. If you have overwatered, the terrarium will be covered with heavy condensation. If this happens, remove the cover and wipe out the condensation with paper towels.
After planting and watering, place the terrarium in a cool area away from the windows and allow the plants to "rest" for two days to adjust to their new home. Now, your terrarium is ready to be placed where it will enhance your room. Light, monthly watering and occasional pruning to remove any dead leaves and to keep your plants in proportion; This is all you need to do to enjoy your garden. You will probably be so proud of your DoPlastic Terrarium that you will want to present one as a special gift to a special friend or Loved one.

CLEANING

Despite the glasslike appearance, window cleaning liquids containing solvents should not be used on them. Since this surface can easily be scratched, the safest cleaning method is to flush with water to loosen dirt, then sponge gently with warm water and mild soap or detergent. Rinse with fresh water and blot dry with a clean cloth or chamois.

OTHER IDEAS

Fresh flowers in water are always a beautiful arrangement. Simply fill bottom half of Terrarium 50% full of cool clean water and lay a bed of flowers in it, looks very elegant

ARTIFICIAL PLANTS

If you prefer to use artificial plants or flowers, use green Styrofoam or clay as a base and insert plants.
