North London's answer to the Traveling Wilburys, Snowpony is a veritable supergroup of '90s indie talent. Sole songwriter and vocalist Katharine Gifford dallied in Stereolab and Moonshake, Deb Googe played bass in noise gods My Bloody Valentine, and drummer Max Corradi thwacked skins for Quickspace. With the production talents of John McEntire of Chicago's feted Tortoise, THE SLOW-MOTION WORLD OF SNOWPONY promised everything that the alternative scene required to emerge from its Britpop-induced coma. From its cover image of galleons under a fierce orange sky, this debut is certainly a curious affair.
"Easy Way Down" is a hypnotic mess of dirty guitars, and its disturbing mood hangs heavy over the entire proceedings. Gifford's flat vocals are suited to the amorphous likes of "A Way to Survive," driven by Googe's bass and reminiscent of the latter's illustrious past. The lyrics are never less than intriguing, and the trio shows an adventurous, though not gratuitous, approach to sampling. The Sonics lend funky bass to "John Brown (Triumphal March)," and the closing "Pylons" improves on all before it, building upon a frail Bad Seeds sample to mournful and haunting effect.
