The New York Village Voice's Dean of American Rock Critics, Robert Christgau, has built a reputation since the late 1960s for opinionated, stimulating music journalism. ANY OLD WAY YOU CHOOSE IT, a collection of pieces written for the Voice and for Newsday between 1967 and 1973, proves his status is well deserved. (Christgau's comment on the Beatles' MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR: "Let's blame it on Capitol Records and the Maharishi, shall we?"). His essay on the first Monterey Pop festival--and on the second, public memory of which has lapsed into obscurity--seem like they were written only yesterday; Christgau's dim view of Jimi Hendrix's performance is so far out of step with history it's almost thrilling. This is the case with many of his judgments, from his championing of so-called bubblegum music (and singles bands in general) to his perceptive analyses of the Rolling Stones 1972 tour and, a few pages later, Mott the Hoople, who had just scored a big hit with "All the Young Dudes" courtesy of David Bowie. All this is entertainingly punctuated by the succinct dismissals ("Recommended to Stooges fans who have just found a $5 bill. B MINUS") and academic ratings of his legendary Consumer Guide, and the kind of personal revelations one wishes were still part of every rock critic's repertoire.
