1862 NAVY GENERAL ORDER CIVIL WAR COMMANDER DISMISSED

Here is an original Civil War  U.S. Navy Department  General Order  (no number)  dated September 20., 1862  from Washington, D.C. sent to all ships from Gideon Wells, Secretary of the Navy. The Department announces the dismissal of a Commanding Officer after he failed to destroy a ship that made it through the blockade. This is a two page, three part document. The second two (dated  Sept. 8, 1862 and Sept. 4, 1862)  are responses from the dismissed Commander and a Rear Admiral defending the Commander's actions.   These are Navy General Orders, and as such are very rare, much rarer than Army General Orders. This document is in very good condition, (bottom right corner is creased)   It measures  7. 25 x 5.5   inches .   An important and special addition to your Navy or Civil War collection.
