Voyage in the Sunbeam:Sea Travel Memoir Antique Leather

A beautifully bound and illustrated edition of this account of an ocean voyage in 1876.

Told from the interesting perspective of a woman who was a passenger on the voyage ~

A VOYAGE IN THE 'SUNBEAM'

OUR HOME ON THE OCEAN FOR ELEVEN MONTHS

BY

LADY BRASSEY

WITH 66 ILLUSTRATIONS ENGRAVED ON WOOD BY G. PEARSON CHIEFLY AFTER DRAWINGS BY THE HON. A. Y. BINGHAM

NEW IMPRESSION

LONDON: LONGMANS, GREEN, AND CO.

1903.

DESCRIPTION:

Hardcover: finely bound in blue leather over boards. Gold gilt emblem and edges. Brown leather over spine with raised bands and ornate gilt decoration. Red spine label. Marbling to edges and endpapers. Frontispiece and several additional illustrations in black and white. 492 pages including Appendix compiled from the Log-Book.

Size: 51/2 x 71/4".

Condition: Leather covers show rubbing to extremities. Some other light scuffs and scratches. Leather is starting to crack along edge of spine causing the front cover to be a bit loose. Some separation between end pages but the text block is otherwise solid. Some discoloration to blank end pages. A few areas with minor foxing. Very Good condition.

There is a label inside the cover showing that this book was given as a prize for English to a student in The Royal Grammar School in Colchester, England. There is a more recent signature in ink above the label.

The voyage of the Sunbeam occurred in 1876. Lady Brassey's account was first published in a series of newspaper articles and then in book form in 1876. The Sunbeam sailed from England to South America, Hawaii, Japan, China, North Africa and a number of other exotic ports.

This was a new edition with the fine leather binding and illustrations.
