This is a rare antique poetry book, for ladies I think - about different flowers & their meanings.

About 133 flowers listed in the Contents, and what that flower 'represents".  Each flower has a page with a  poem.

  (Example: Bay Leaf - I change but in dying, Bachelor's Button - Celibacy, Saffron - Marriage, Zinnia - Absence, etc)

The Book -  1855, First Edition. Red cloth (heavily embossed both front & back) hard cover with gold gilt cover decorations & spine lettering & decorations.  Measures about 7" x 5" x1 1/2" thick, with 268 pages & a Floral Dictionary in the rear. Book ads in front. Tissue protected black & white frontispiece of two girls covered in flowers. No other illustrations.

Condition - The book is well attached, all pages are well attached. The cover has some overall wear, rubs, a faint small darkish stain on the upper back cover (not bad).  The lower front cover is splitting a bit at the spine, but still well attached. The top & bottom spine edges are worn & rolled. The corners are bumped & worn. The outer page edges are soiled & there is a slight shift to the right. Inside front cover is cracked. Very faint inscription on the inside cover page (barely legible).  Much foxing & tanning to the frontispiece, tissue cover & Title Page - otherwise, just a faint bit of random blush of foxing here & there - not bad.  I can't find any other writing, tape, tears, soiling, odors, mildew or water damage.
