JACK SHADBOLT and the Coastal Indian Image by Marjorie M. Halpin University of British Columbia Press; about 8x10 inches, 58 pages. 1986 Trade Softback Edition in NEW condition. No dustjacket Foreword by Michael M. Ames. Museum Note No. 18; published in association with the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology. 57 B&W and color illustrations, photos and diagrams plus large fold-out illustrated page at back of book. AUthor finds the changes in the way Indian forms occur in Shadbolt's paintings an appropriate expression of the changing attitudes of British Columbians to native society. From the late 1940s to his 1969 retrospective, Shadbolt chiefly used details from Indian sculptures as elements in highly designed watercolors. Subsequently they became part of more generalized primitives, combining with elements of tribal art of the Southwestern United States and Melanisia. But in the 1980s, the coastal artifacts have become wholly integrated yet autonomous forms in the paintings. Thank you and good luck! Powered by eBay Turbo Lister |
