This custom-made evening gown was worn by my mother-in-law to one of the 1965 inaugural balls for Lyndon Baines Johnson after he was sworn in as President. She had this designed and made by a seamstress so there are no labels indicating size or material; I'm estimating on both. We think this is about a size 4 (she was quite petite, about 5' 2" tall, and rather busty)--the length from top of the straps to hem is about 53". Material is a heavy cream-colored brocade (probably silk, but may be polyester) and lined. Dress zips up the back. On front are 6 heavy silver metal decorative buttons, each with 17 crystals. Also at bust is a fringed bow (see second photo for details). Condition is very good given its age; it was only worn once. We'd love to see this one-of-a-kind dress go to someone who either loves a bit of history (although undocumented), collects old gowns or who loves the retro look and would wear this to make a unique statement. |
