1998 seemed to bring a bumper crop of celebrity novelty recordings, a genre long thought dead. First there was George Martin's IN MY LIFE, which featured vocal performances by everyone from Robin Williams to Sean Connery, and then this offering from cinema's favorite hoodlum, Joe Pesci. Few will probably recall that this is actually Pesci's second recording. Years before he found fame as an actor, he tried his hand at pop music, releasing an unsuccessful album under the name "Little Joe." Unlike his debut, this belated follow-up is played mostly for laughs, coming as it does in the wake of his highly regarded film career. Over a variety of musical styles (everything from Latin to swing to blues-rock) he plays off the gangster image he created in blockbuster films like Goodfellas and My Cousin Vinny, hamming it up with an exaggerated Brooklyn accent. There's even a rap tune ("Wise Guy") inspired by his Goodfellas character, leaving no doubt about Pesci's status as O.G.
