pages with index, abundantly illustrated with 430 illustrations (mostly b/w photos but

For fifty years one of the most scenic California Railroad
Routes was the Narrow Gauge South Pacific Coast, running from Santa Cruz
to Alameda, with access to downtown Oakland. Built through unstable
terrain, the SPC succeeded in hauling
timber, farm products and mining material plus a brisk passenger
business. Includes an equipment roster of
Locomotives and Rolling Stock. With some information on the 1906 San
Francisco Earthquake and it's effect on the Railway, and schematics of both trains and
stations.
It includes sections on: The Great Railroad
Game in the Marsh; The Town that James G. Fair Built; How Hog Davis Won
the Webster St. Bridge; SP - Last Line to Reach Santa Cruz; From the
Lease of 1887; To the 1906 Earthquake; Roster; Index.
The
book has beige covers, measuring 8.75 by 11.25 inches; the book is
beautiful with virtually no wear, minimal pencil mark to first page
corner, tight binding, and like-new pages; the jacket is
better-than-average with three small tears and rubbing at the top of the
spine, small crease at top-left cover edge, some minimal bumping at extremities, and a
few minimal scuffs. Condition overall is Very Good+.

PROVENANCE: My grand-uncle was a fireman
on the Western Pacific and on the New York Central in the 1940's and '50s,
and has always been deeply interested in trains and railroad history.
Over the past 50 years he has amassed a fine library on the subject -
all the books are very clean, and from a dry, non-smoking household.
Most of the books are in near-new condition, as are many of the
pamphlets and booklets. He has decided to sell his collection, and I'm
very happy he asked me to help him.
Every item I list has been RESEARCHED to
the best of my ability in order to offer it here for a LOWER-THAN-AVERAGE
LIST PRICE - a fair and reasonable price for all involved (you the
bidder, my uncle, and myself). I refuse to gamble away his books at
risky, too-low opening bids, but have done my best to list each one at a
well-researched and competitive opening price, that will hold up when
researched by a potential bidder.
