Album notes
The Working Title: Joel Hamilton (vocals, guitar, piano); Adam Pavao (guitar); Chris Ginn (bass guitar); Ross Taylor (drums). Recording information: Allaire, Shokan, New York. This Charleston, South Carolina quartet plays a pleasing mix of pop and emo on its debut set (co-helmed by Liz Phair producer Brad Wood), with songs that combine a lyrical sense of wonder and confusion with skillfully assembled arrangements that belie the band's comparative inexperience. "Weigh Me Down" alternates low-key piano verses with pulsating choruses, while the album's single, "The Mary Getaway," is a diamond-hard vignette about vulnerability and attraction, and the ominous "The Crash" builds steadily from its brooding U2-style guitar intro into a roaring climax.
