Oriental Glazes: Their Chemistry, Origins, and Re-Creation by Nigel Wood. Paperback book published by Pitman/Watson Guptill 1978, 96 pages with black and white photographs. Nigel Wood traces here the development of some of the finest Oriental glazes over more than a thousand years of experiment and innovation, from the earliest Chinese lime glazes through to the modern glazes used in the porcelain factories of Ching-te Chen. He describes in depth the chemistry, analyses and construction of Far Eastern glazes and, by reviving a simple but neglected method of glaze calculation, shows how accurate reconstructions of these superb glazes can be made with common Western pottery raw materials, without the need for atomic weights or molecular formulae. By concentrating on the essential chemistry of the glazes, the book explains how the Chinese could have produced their magnificent glazes from very simple recipes, while maintaining a standard that makes them suitable for use today on modern industrial stonewares and porcelains. Many of the book's recipes have been tried and tested over years of regular production in the author's own pottery. Of paramount importance is the fact that this book supplies dozens of analyses of Far Eastern glazes, together with full instructions for turning them into actual glaze recipes-thereby providing the practising potter with the potential for endless experiment and discovery of his own.
