The Boston Acoustics Horizon Trio tabletop AM/FM/CD stereo music system features an integrated AM/FM stereo radio and single CD-player with built-in amplifier and stereo speakers inside a stylish soft-touch enclosure. In addition, the units supports the optional Boston Acoustic HRD-i docking adapter (sold separately) which allows you to play your iPod music through the Trio.
Display: The unit's large easy-to-read, high-contrast, blue backlit LCD display clearly shows the station, clock, elapsed time, and alarm/sleep status. The display automatically adjusts to ambient light. You can also set the overall range of the display brightness and contrast from 0 to 20. Display dimensions: 2-5/8" wide, 1-1/2" high.
Speakers/Amplifier: The Horizon Trio features two full-range 3-1/2" drivers, specifically designed for this radio, each with a rear-firing port to enhance the bass output. These high-performance speakers are coupled with an actively-equalized amplifier that uses Boston BassTrac circuitry for full, satisfying sound, even at low volume. The result is a unit that delivers smooth, natural response and room-filling sound despite its small size.
Note: Placing the Horizon Trio near a wall or corner will enhance its bass response. The unit's bass ports should not be blocked.
CD Player: The Boston Horizon Trio features a front, slot-loading, single CD player. The unit's CD player supports playback of standard audio CDs and MP3 encoded CD-R and CD-RW discs. The built-in CD player offers the following playback functions.
- Play, Pause, Stop
- Fast Forward, Rewind
- Next Track, Previous Track
- Repeat All Tracks, Repeat One Track
- Shuffle Play
Tuner: The Boston Acoustics Horizon Trio radio has a highly sensitive AM/FM digital tuner which supports RDS (Radio Data System). It can pull in weak FM stations while its high selectivity allows it to separate closely-spaced stations clearly. The tuning knob makes it easy to manually tune to your favorite stations. The unit's built-in AM/FM digital tuner offers the following features.
- AM/FM Presets: The Horizon Trio radio features 15 station presets for your 5 favorite AM and 10 favorite FM stations. Once you set the preset stations, you can quickly tune the preset stations in the selected band (FM1, FM2, or AM) with a press of the preset number button.
- Manual/Seek Tuning: The tuning knob can be turned in either direction for manually tuning up or down the selected band. When the knob is pressed, the Horizon Trio will seek up the radio band for the next receivable station.
- RDS (Radio Data System): RDS, or the Radio Data System, is a system by which useful information can be transmitted to an FM tuner or receiver. It provides a variety of features including a more precise way of tuning and an eight-character display of the station (when applicable). Information available will often include the following:
- the station name
- an indication as to whether the station broadcasts travel bulletins
- an outline of the program currently being broadcast
- the current time
Note: RDS works on the FM waveband only since the RDS information is encoded within the FM signal. RDS is not available on medium wave, long wave, or the AM wavebands.
Antenna Inputs: This unit is equipped with a built-in AM antenna and an attached 5' FM wire antenna. You can unplug either antenna if you wish to connect an optional external antenna to the AM spring-clip antenna input or the threaded FM coax antenna input.
Preamp Outputs: The unit has a pair of stereo RCA preamp outputs which allows you to connect the Horizon Trio to an external amplifier.
Dual Auxiliary Inputs: The Horizon Trio features a front panel, 3.5mm minijack input and a rear-panel stereo RCA input for connecting external audio sources to the unit such as your portable MP3 or CD player.
Input for Optional HRD-i iPod Docking Adapter: The Horizon Trio has a proprietary input on the rear panel for the optional Boston Acoustics HRD-i iPod Docking Adapter (sold separately). When an iPod is connected and selected as the source, you can control it using the front panel buttons or the supplied remote control.
Controls: The Boston Horizon Trio offers front-panel controls as well as comes supplied with an IR wireless remote control.
- Front-Panel Controls: These logical, intuitive front-panel controls make it easy to operate the Horizon Trio.
- Remote Control: The supplied IR wireless remote control should be pointed at the front of the Trio and within 20 feet of the unit and more than 45-degrees off axis. The remote control operates off of a single CR2025 3V lithium battery. When the remote is not being used, it can be conveniently stored in the recess on top the Horizon Trio. The remote also features a magnetic backing so it can be attached to many metal surfaces.
Audio Controls: You can independently adjust the bass and treble of the Horizon Trio between -5 and 5.
Dual Alarms: The radio features two independent wake-up alarms which can be set to music (radio or CD), tone, or both. When set to music or tone, the alarm tone or radio station starts playing quietly at first, then with increasing volume. When the alarm is set to both music or tone, the tuned radio station plays quietly with a gradually increasing volume. After 5 minutes, the music stops playing and the alarm tone begins to sound at a gradually increasing volume. In addition, you can set the alarms to work ever day, weekdays only or weekends only.
Snooze Feature: If you want to sleep a while longer after the alarm sounds, you can use the Snooze feature. The Snooze is activated by simply touching the metal rim around the front of the radio. The snooze function will silence the alarm for 10 minutes. Each additional touch adds another 5 minutes to the snooze time, up to a maximum of 60 minutes.
Sleep Timer: You can set the unit's sleep timer to play the radio for a preset amount of time, then shut itself off. The sleep timer can be set for up to 90 minutes in 5-minute increments.
Headphone Output: For private listening, you can plug headphones into the front panel's 3.5mm minijack headphone output. The main speaker mutes when headphones are plugged in.
Power Supply: The Horizon Trio operates off of standard AC household current using the supplied 8' detachable AC power cord. This unit is not battery powered.
Memory Backup: The Horizon Trio is equipped with a Super Capacitor to preserve radio presets, clock and alarm settings in the event of a power interruption for a period of 24-48 hours.
Security Connection: A connection point for a security cable is provided on the rear of the radio. This is the same type of connection point as found on many laptop computers, allowing you to connect a computer security cable (sold separately) between a solid anchor point and the Trio radio to help prevent theft.
Boston P.O.P.: The Boston Personal Option Plan (P.O.P.) allows you to match your environment with optional grilles in multiple colors for the Horizon series speaker system. In addition to the Gray grilles that come with the speakers, you can purchase grilles in Glacier, Chocolat, Rose Bud, Chili Pepper, Caramel, Pearl Gray, Spanish Moss, Onyx, or Olive. These optional grilles are available directly from the manufacturer.
