Industry reviews
The early 1900s were a great time to be a woman in New York. Women were thriving politically, artistically and emotionally. . . . World War I and its 'repressive aftermath' turned a feminist heaven into hell, according to Adickes, who teaches English at Winona State University in Minnesota. Prohibition speak-easies replaced political gatherings, and the flapper replaced the feminist. . . . Like many a women's studies class, [this book] is dry and terribly earnest, but its heart is in the right place and it succeeds in illustrating a chapter in history. Annotation copyright H.W. Wilson Company.
