Synopsis
In the past, over 12 million wild salmon returned each year to the Columbia Basin to spawn. Born in fresh water, Salmon fight their way to the sea as adolescents. After six years they return to the river of their origin to spawn. But the Columbia River has changed a great deal during this century, and the future of the wild salmon is uncertain. The dams which supply inexpensive electricity to the Northwest and the clear-cutting of timber companies have reduced the salmon population greatly. The 12 million returning salmon have been reduced to 2 million and that figure is falling. This book explores the relationship between people and salmon in the Northwest and the heroism of the scientists who fight to preserve a future for the salmon on the Columbia River.

Publisher's Note
Salmon are the soul of the Northwest, a cultural cornerstone of the region. Today the salmon's future is uncertain and has become one of the decade's most closely watched environmental issues. Science writer Cone's masterful telling of this story traces the dramatic history of the anadromous fish; introduces environmentalists, scientists, politicians, and industry executives involved in the struggle to save the salmon; and identifies the ecologic, economic, and social issues surrounding this contemporary crisis.

Industry reviews
"A dazzling achievement...'A Common Fate is an inspirational book because it shows that committed individuals can make a difference, from the creek out back to the halls of Congress."
