Detailed item info
Synopsis
Nine tours that celebrate gay cultural lore, history, and gossip in New York City. Each tour includes 20 to 30 locations, such as the Stonewall site, bars and clubs, and hotels dating back to the turn of the century. Includes profiles of figures such as James Baldwin, Willa Cather, Rita Mae Brown, Cary Grant, Montgomery Clift, Leonard Bernstein, Virgil Thomson; quotations abound from Hart Crane and Edna St. Vincent Millay. There is a soldier's description of his love for Walt Whitman, and an account of the first governor of New York, who was apparently an avid cross-dresser.

Publisher's Note
A lively, campy guide presents nine walking tours that celebrate gay culture, history, and gossip, each taking in twenty to thirty locations, including rallying sites like Stonewall, bars and clubs, and the haunts of famous homosexuals. Original.

Industry reviews
Not your ordinary tour guide, this work "is overflowing with gay lore it isn't history the way you learned it in school; first of all, it's a lot trashier." Good dish on icons such as James Dean or Tallulah Bankhead complements the story of New York's first colonial governor, who liked to appear in drag impersonating his cousin Queen Anne. Each of the nine tours is a campy celebration of gay and lesbian history, culture, and gossip. A writer for the New Yorker and Out, Hurewitz takes the reader to all the places important to our current understanding of gay life and introduces us to a mixture of people who have enriched our lives with their talents. His carefully researched book is above all fun to read, whether used as a guide or a history. Highly recommended for general interest as well as gay studies collections. Howard E. Miller, MLS, St. Louis
