Synopsis
Michael B. Oren's comprehensive history of the American presence in the Middle East begins shortly after the founding of the new nation, when American ships, having lost the protection of the British navy, faced the problem of pirates off the Barbary coast in the Mediterranean. Continuing from there up through the early 21st-century war in Iraq, Oren traces social, political, cultural, religious, and military encounters, including archeological expeditions, missionary work, travel, and the formal exchange of ambassadors and other representatives. He also traces the many ways the region inspired literary works by writers such as Washington Irving and Mark Twain, as well as other media, including the film LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. He shows how, in the 20th century, every American president had his own successes and failures in the region, including Cold War tensions between the two superpowers, the hostage crisis in Iraq under Jimmy Carter, the bombing of embassies and attacks on ships, and the enduring Arab-Israeli conflict, which dominates American energies for decades. Through it all, Oren provides a study of key events and personalities as he deftly explores issues such as colonialism, imperialism, and the use of military power. He is sensitive to resentments and misunderstandings, while also accounting for altruism, good intentions, and the desire for security and self-determination. Illustrated with maps, photographs, charts, and chronologies.

Publisher's Note
Covering more than two hundred years of history, a study of American involvement in the Middle East ranges from the battle against the Barbary pirates and early explorers in the region to the conquest of Fallujah, examining the diverse roles of American statesmen, merchants, soldiers, missionaries, explorers, and others in shaping this troubled region.

"For now POWER, FAITH AND FANTASY is the best history we have of the history we've had, and an indispensable guide from point A to point Z."
 (02/19/2006)

"This engrossing, informative, and frequently surprising survey of U.S. involvement in the Middle East over the past 230 years is particularly timely....Appealing to both scholars and general readers."
