Item specifics
Type: Cabinets & CupboardsAge: 1800-1899
Original/Reproduction: OriginalStyle: Gothic
Region of Origin: America

This listing is for an Antique Renaissance Revival Hand Carved Oak Monumental Cupboard or China Cabinet.  It is quite unique, with surprising detail in the carvings.  It is very difficult to carve oak, as the wood is incredibly dense and prone to mistakes, but this antique piece has absolutely stunning carvings that cover the entire piece.  The columns feature leaves and cones carved along both sides from the bottom all the way to the top.  Literally every single cone is much different from the next one, reaching for the same variance found in nature and bringing it to this piece of art.  Topping carvings twice on both columns are very fine carvings of lions with open mouths - the bottom lions clench brass rings in their jaws, teeth exposed and intimidating.

The drawer hardware is original to the piece, featuring a lion with an open mouth and a pull ring ornately figured with two lion or fish type figures mutually clenching a ball.  Almost without exception the carvings are not simply applied wood, but literally hand hewn and hand crafted from the columns, drawer fronts and crest of the piece.  The drawer is hand dovetailed - something quite unique to oak pieces, as they are very difficult to work with when tooling by hand.  The bottom of the drawer is cut to slide into the cross boards.

The glass cupboard is lifted on two incredibly turned columns - the lathe work is very fine, finding a broad range of mountains and valleys in less than a foot of space.  The oak allows for unprecedented crispness in the turnings.  They join the piece and secure it using large dowels.

The piece is topped by a rail featuring tiny turned spindles, each individually carved and inserted.  Both front corners of the rail feature fantastic finials with very broad proportions.

Most oak on the piece has been carefully leveled down to be as thin and light as possible, so while the piece is monumental and very heavy as a full unit, when it is broken down it is manageable unlike many large oak pieces.  The rail lifts off, the glass cupboard separates leaving 3 easy pieces to work with.

Lower cabinet measurements:  35 1/2" wide by 21" deep by 39 1/2" high
Middle cupboard measurements:  38 1/4" wide by 14 1/2" deep by 46" high
Top rail measurements:  30 1/4" wide by 13" deep by 9" high

Please carefully review measurements to ensure the piece will fit comfortably in your home; it sits almost exactly 94 1/2" high.  Our ceilings are 95" and with some careful maneuvering were able to fit the rail on the piece leaving a 1/3 - 1/2 inch gap between the piece and ceiling.

Condition:
Visually Excellent Condition -

Damage to the bottom door - can be reinforced from behind without difficulty by applying a simple bracket, but for full restoration would require professional work.
Split in wood panel on right hand side.
Replaced bottom on the inside of the cabinet base.
No shelving for inside of cabinet or cupboard
No key
Missing one spindle on left hand side of rail
Little "shelf" behind turned columns appears to be missing some kind of little spindles?  There are small dowel size holes that run along the bottom of the little shelf; is not visually noticable unless looking below the shelf to see the little holes
Glass front of cupboard appears to be replaced.
Two lions on the top could be missing the brass rings, as they have holes in their mouths where a ring might go through
Top left hand finial broken on back side, not very visible from the front.  Both top finials were reduced on the tops, probably to fit a slightly lower ceiling.
Wear associated with age and use in the form of minor chips, scratches or dings.  Please use the 30+ photos included in this listing to review full condition.
