The award-winning Latin American author of the Memory of Fire trilogy presents a kaleidoscopic, trenchant look at the dichotomy that exists between first-world wealth, privileges, and power and third-world deprivation, helplessness, and torture, in a series of essays that include "The Sacred Car," "The Impunity of Power," "The Right to Rave," and "How to Resist Useless Vices." Industry reviews
"...Galeano...in compiling this catalog of crimes and absurdities has both the acidity of Jonathan Swift and his dark humor."
New Yorker  (01/08/2001)

"[B]oth electric and exhortative....You'll need to allow the professor his didactic moments. He's angry and with good reason."
Voice Literary Supplement  (12/20/2000)

Synopsis: (for information only and is not part of the discription)

In a series of mock lesson plans, the author of the incomparable Memory of Fire trilogy provides an eloquent, passionate, funny, and shocking expos of our first world privileges and assumptions. From a master class in "The Impunity of Power" to a seminar on "The Sacred Car"-with tips along the way on "How to Resist Useless Vices" and a declaration of "The Right to Rave"-he guides us through a world unevenly divided between abundance and deprivation, power and helplessness.
