General Description: Beauty, when examined under a certain angle together with a critical gaze, illuminates daily banality and transforms it into a glittering spectacle within an unclear, difficult and stubborn reality. Here the artist attempts to ‘de-secularize’ photography by touching the 'non-believer' and exposing him/her to a 'divine’, spiritual experience within everyday life. The context is unknown and through inner reflection and association alone does the viewer create a narrative. No time line or specific location is given, just awe and contemplation generated by the conjunction of beauty and the inquiring eye. The Artist:David Adika, born 1970 in Jerusalem and currently in residency in Paris, is a photographer working mainly with still lives and portraiture in which the critical gaze is concealed in ‘beauty’. Beauty in Adika's works, together with the inquisitive eye, acts as both a honey-trap that delights the viewer, and a contemplative force, reflecting conflicts of identity and doom. David Adika received his BFA and MFA from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, and has exhibited in many solo and group shows in Glasgow, Barcelona, Tel Aviv, Stockholm and more. Adika has received numerous awards and scholarships, among them the Keren Sharet of the America-Israel Fund and the Young Artist Award of the Israel Ministry of Art and Culture.
