This type of "writing box" was popular with sea captains and wealthy travelers in the 1800's. Overall dimensions are 13" by 10" by 4.5" high sloping down to 2.5". It has mother of pearl inlaid flowers in the hinged lid and around the border of the cover. Other flowers are painted on the cover. These are in good condition. The finish is black lacquer. All four sides have gilt decorations. All four feet, an unusual feature, are intact and have painted borders. In the back there is a small keyhole. The writing surface is new felt, not original. Beneath this lid are five compartments. The largest, for paper, etc., is 11.25" by 8.25". Two holders, one fo an inkpot, flank the pen tray. By pressing down at the right end of the pen tray a hidden compartment, 7.5" X 1.5" X 1", is revealed. The black lacquer finish has "alligatored" to varying degrees. There is a small chip in the lower right quadrent of the cover. The front side gilt decoration has a narrow black stain. There is a barely visible 1.5 in. crack in the lower left outside edge.
