Vintage Unwashed Handmade Trapunto GRAPE quilt 84"x101"

I bought this wonderful quilt about twenty-five years ago from a man who had inherited a cedar chest

from his Mother or Aunt (can't remember which; but that is irrelevant) and it contained several prize quilts. I loved this one because of the Trapunto grapes and the fresh, clean look. He said these quilts had never been used. In the years that I have owned it ... it has been stored in a white pillowcase. I may have displayed it once for a short time, but purple was not right for me. When I took it out for pictures, I was surprised to find a few climate stains. Don't remember if these were there when I purchased it.

Trapunto or stuffed work is done by first quilting a design then painstakingly stuffing tiny bits of cotton through a separation in the backing fabric until the design is stuffed full. /

The maker of this quilt was very talented and shows it in the work on this quilt which has appliqué, embroidery, trapunto and wonderful quilting. The top is made up of several large blocks and they may be sewn together by one of the old treadle machines that made such fine stitches. The tiny green border may be machine stitched on the lining, but hand stitched on the front side. Appliqués and embroidery are also quilted around. Very neat small stitches about nine to the inch.

Size: 85" x 101". (pictured on a California King bed that is 72" wide and 84" long).  It weighs five pounds.

Condition: Unwashed ... some design pencil marks still show; maybe as many as twenty areas.
There are a few light tan climate stains which should come out if you opt to soak it.
