I purchased this exciting old pine piece from an Antique dealer and he said it was a scrub or wash-board box/tray. I have seen pictures of scrubboards, but never one in a box like this. I guess, at one time it could have been water-tight and could have been for scrubbing laundry. Someone suggested that it might have been used for scrubbing animal hides while tanning to make them supple. Your guess is as good as mine. All I know is; that it is a very interesting wooden primitive piece and would be great displayed with your other wood collection or take center-stage on your harvest table.

  • Size: It is BIG ... weighs 10½ pounds. Measurements vary ... TOP: measures 16½" to 17¼" wide and 29¼" to 29½" long. BOTTOM: 25¼" long and 13" wide. Side and end pieces flare out and are about 5" wide. One end is rounded and all the other top edges are flat. I am sure there was some reason for this. The wood is about 3/4" thick.

  • Condition: Wonderful, time-worn, primitive condition. The wood has a clean, scrubbed look and I would think it has been used with water. There are pieces of metal straps/braces, either original or make-do repairs. Also old nails. Another place on the end board that looks like something has been nailed there. Across one end of the bottom you see two old nail heads and one nail hole (in the crack), that looks like it was nailed to something across the bottom. Maybe a stand or just a support. ?? I'm just guessing ... I think the wood is pine. As it ages; it gets harder and heavier. Unfortunately, the bottom board with the scrub ridges has split in the middle. Someone tried to glue it back together as I see remnants of glue on the edges. I am sure the wood has shrunk over the years and the 'box' is not as tight as it was originally. It is still a wonderful antique, primitive piece and if it could talk, on my, what stories it could tell.
