Vintage Balm of Gilead jar. I am estimating the age as 1970's. This is a large piece measuring 10 1/2" tall by 5" across. It is ceramic and has a transfer design with gilt highlights. The jar is in good condition, It has 1 small chip on the inside lip 3/8" and one on the edge of the lid 1/2" as shown. Great for display and storage of your balm buds.
Here is some information I have gotten from the internet about Balm of Gilead:
POPLAR BUDS also known as Balm of Gilead Buds, these buds have a long history of medicinal use. The poplar buds used to make Balm of Gilead extracts are usually from Cottonwood Poplars; the most effective medicines are made from the extremely aromatic and resinous dormant leaf and floral buds of the cottonwood poplar, Populus trichocarpa.
The entire poplar genus contains salicylate precursors, which are related to aspirin and share its properties as an anti-inflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic. The species vary greatly in their medicinal properties; those with highly resinous buds are usually the most effective. Any ailment helped or relieved by aspirin will probably respond in the same way to the internal use of poplar-bud medication. This includes sore throats, fevers and headaches, as well as arthritis and rheumatism. The buds also contribute a balsamic scent. The aroma of poplar buds is heavy and nostril clearing, a little like menthol but without the sensation of coolness.
CAUTION!! Probably less than 1% of the American population seems to have an exaggerated epidermal sensitivity to the poplar bud resin or juice and they develop the early signs of anaphylactic shock; flushed face, labored breathing, swollen face, itchy runny eyes, and some dizziness. Most of these people have general sensitivity to aspirin and aspirin products. REFERENCES: Gilman, et al 1980,Moore, M. 1993
