Movie description
In THE SIGN OF FOUR, the well-cast Arthur Wontner makes his third appearance as legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, aided by sharp direction from Graham Cutts. When an escaped killer embarks on a ruthless quest to track down a missing treasure, as well as the man who cheated him out of it, he ends up on the doorstep of Mary Morston. Terrified, Mary turns to the cunning detective, who must penetrate the menacing carnival underworld in order to crack the case and return Mary to a life of safety and comfort (with a little help from Ian Hunter's Dr. Watson, of course). An impressively faithful adaptation of the classic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story, THE SIGN OF FOUR is also notable for its intense action sequences. THE TRIUMPH OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, also starring Wontner, is based largely on Conan Doyle's "The Valley of Fear," an involved and unusually structured Holmes story. It has Holmes and Watson, alongside the obligatory bumbling police, trying to prevent dangerous criminal mastermind Professor Moriarty from murdering an American gentleman (Leslie Perrins) with a dark and mysterious history.
