Henry Purcell is widely regarded as one of the finest English composers to have lived and his works for the stage are considered by many to be not only the first English operas, but the very best. However, for this version of Purcell's dramatic opera, King Arthur, the producers have chosen to translate the work into German - something definitely not made clear in the description of the DVD. King Arthur was an English legend and Purcell a legendary English composer with a particular gift for "word painting", that is making the music fit the words like a glove. Crudely transposing the opera into another language in this way loses Purcell's subtlety and completely, utterly and irretrievably ruins it.
