Planisphere 2

The Super Planisphere

Planisphere 2, the Super Planisphere is a patented constellation, star, planet and deep-sky object location system that takes the pain out of learning the night sky.  Planisphere 2 uses a simple 3-digit code to enable you to find and identify constellations, bright stars and planets that are visible at any time of the night and on any night of the year. You will even be able to locate some of the brighter deep-sky objects, such as star clusters and galaxies. Planisphere 2 makes the perfect companion to the beginner's telescope.

Here's What You Get

1. Calculating Wheel with built-in adjustable compass that allows precise adjustment for your specific location.

2. 20 Star Maps (10-inch diameter)  display 56 Constellations, 66 Bright Stars and 33 Deep-Sky Objects.

3. Ground Compass allows up to 10 maps to be used at the same time in group situations and astronomy labs.

4.  Red cap to convert your flashlight to red light.

5. Carrying Envelope

6. Manual with Planetary Tables

Super Planisphere vs. the Traditional Planisphere

Traditional planispheres, have been in existence for hundreds of years. While they are useful to the experienced astronomer, they can be very difficult for the beginner to use. There are 3 main reasons for this difficulty in using a traditional planisphere.

Traditional Planisphere Problem 1:

Traditional planispheres use one small star map to represent the entire dome of the sky above you. Because all of the constellations are on one small map, they are tiny and hard to relate to the actual sky.

Solution: Planisphere 2 uses twenty 10-inch diameter star maps to cover the entire sky. This is more than 20 times the area of a traditional planisphere star map. Only a few constellations are on each Planisphere 2 map, making them large and easy to see. The larger the constellations are on the star maps, the more closely they match the apparent size of the actual constellations in the sky.

Traditional Planisphere Problem 2:

Another consequence of having the entire sky represented on one small star map is that some constellations are very distorted. The closer you get to the edge of the traditional planisphere star map, the more distorted the constellations become, making many of them unrecognizable to the beginner.

Solution: Unlike with traditional planispheres, the constellations on Planisphere 2 star maps have very little distortion. Since each map covers only a small portion of the sky, the constellations on the maps look very much like the actual constellations in the sky.

Traditional Planisphere Problem 3:

To use a traditional planisphere, you hold it above your head (blocking part of the sky) and then align it with true north. You next face the difficult task of relating the small map, positioned awkwardly over your head, to the entire dome of the sky above you, from horizon to horizon.

Solution: Planisphere 2 star maps are held just below the line of sight to the actual stars in the sky. This makes it easy to relate the maps to the night sky directly above them.

The end result of all of these improvements is that for the first time it is possible to learn the stars and constellations of the night sky in a very short time. You will learn more using Planisphere 2 for an hour than you would using a traditional planisphere for many weeks or months.

Here's How Planisphere 2 Works

1. Adjust the compass for your location, as described in the manual.

2. Dial in the time and date on the back of Planisphere 2.

3. Select the star map that shows the star, constellation, planet or deep-sky object that you want to find.

4. Look in the Location Codes window (see picture at left) on the front of Planisphere 2. Note the 3-digit code next to your selected star map number (there are 20 star maps).

5. Hold Planisphere 2 level with the ground, and point it away from your body. Turn your body until the compass arrow (see picture at left) points to the 1st digit of the 3-digit code. You are now facing in the correct direction to find your object.

6. The 2nd digit of the 3-digit code tells you about how high in the sky to look as shown by the stickmen on the left.

7. Load the selected star map with the 3rd digit of the 3-digit code directly under Step 7 on the front of Planisphere 2. In the bottom left picture, the star map is shown loaded with the "D" (the 3rd digit) directly under Step 7.

8. Raise Planisphere 2 and tilt it to a comfortable viewing position just below the height in the sky indicated by the 2nd digit of the code.

9. Compare the star map with the actual sky.

The constellations that are shown on the star map will be visible in the night sky directly above the star map. Since there are only a few constellations on each map, they are easy to see and relate to the actual stars in the sky above your map.

Ideal for the Family and for Astronomy Labs

Planisphere 2 comes with a Ground Compass, which allows many observers to use it at the same time. This is ideal for family or group situations or for astronomy labs. Here’s how you use the Ground Compass:

Each of up to 10 observers is given one of the 20 star maps. The Ground Compass is aligned with north, as described in the manual, and put on the ground or on a small cardboard box. The Ground Compass and the star maps all have the letters A-X around their edges.

One person dials in the time and date on Planisphere 2 and calls out the 3-digit code for each star map.`Each observer will walk around the Ground Compass, and stand directly in front of the letter that is 1st digit of the code for his/her map. When the 3rd digit of the code is read out, each observer simply rotates his star map until the 3rd digit (a letter) is straight up in the 12:00 o'clock position.

By standing back a few feet from the edge of the Ground Compass, all observers will have plenty of room to position their star maps and view the night sky above them, without crowding one another.

Once the observers find the objects on their star maps, they can exchange maps and repeat the process, until everyone has had a chance to use all of the maps. In a very short time, the observers will have learned to find and identify the constellations and bright stars that are visible at that time.
