Recorded during the same Warfield Theatre stand that produced 1991's two-disc JERRY GARCIA BAND, HOW SWEET IT IS... features a second helping of JGB standards from a period when the band could rarely do any wrong. The set list is a testament to Jerry Garcia's knowledge and adoration of American musical traditions, played by an ensemble that knew a little something about stretching out the classics and turning them into groove-anthems. John Kahn's illogically-constructed bass lines and Melvin Seals' organ jellyrolls speak to the bandleader's taste for a far-out take on the recognizable repertoire.
The finest moments on HOW SWEET IT IS... are a psychedelic master's take on R&B--not the mindless jam-blues of his '60s San Francisco brethren, but a personalized reconstruction of a musical legacy. Jimmy McCracklin's "Think," Hank Ballard's "Tore Up Over You" and Henderson Thigpen's "That's What Love Will Make You Do" turn the venue into a tie-dyed juke-joint, and the audience into melting fools. Doubtlessly you've heard these chord progressions on a thousand different tunes, but the magical guitar-organ interplay that takes 'em apart and puts 'em back together with a dance floor in mind is one of a kind.
