Synopsis
In the early 1970s, veteran rock photographer Bob Gruen, who has covered performers from Muddy Waters to Madonna, developed a fruitful professional relationship with John Lennon that soon blossomed into close friendship, indirectly gaining Gruen access to some of the musician's most intimate moments. Taken in New York during the decade before Lennon's murder in 1980, these pictures reveal the rich personal life of the ex-Beatle, captured here working, partying, resting, and notably ecstatic just after the birth of his and Yoko's child, Sean. The book is also a document of the darker side of Lennon's personality, with glimpses of the glittering, druggy mid-'70s (including a skeletal David Bowie), and the immediate aftermath of Lennon's famous "lost weekend." Though their subject apparently has all the time in the world, the shadow of Lennon's killing hangs over even the coziest of these images, while Gruen's informative commentary lends a poignant depth to this chronicle of the last years of one of the sixties' most significant artists.
