Detailed item info
Synopsis
Danny Goldberg, a longtime music industry insider who got his start at Billboard covering Woodstock, has over the course of his career worked as manager (Nirvana), label man (Atlantic, Mercury, and Warner Bros. Records), and promoter (Stevie Nicks). But perhaps most important, Goldberg hung around--and this shoulder rubber has plenty of stories to share. Goldberg admits to being a bad journalist because he loved the artists too much to be critical, and in this book his love rarely falters. His admiration reminds skeptics that there were individuals involved in the business in the 1960s and '70s who were truly devoted to the music. This does not blind him, however, to pragmatics: Goldberg candidly describes Kurt Cobain’s ambitions and Bruce Springsteen’s marketing savvy. BUMPING INTO GENIUS is full of insightful and fond anecdotes about a fickle and fascinating industry.

Industry reviews
"Goldberg summons up some fascinating anecdotes as he writes about these performers with much honesty and compassion, bringing it all back home."
 (06/30/2008)

"Goldberg is a rabid rock fan...[he] reminds us that the recording industry was remade in the late '60s and '70s by businessmen-hippies seeking not just profit but proximity to artists they admired and a role in the countercultural ferment. It is one of the many insights in this surprisingly excellent book, an engaging, droll and...largely demystifying look at the evolution of the rock trade from Woodstock to grunge."
