Publisher's Note
This collection of essays--the first of its kind in English--brings together the work of an international group of scholars examining the entire tradition associated with the ancient Cynics. The essays give a history of the movement as well as a state-of-the-art account of the literary, philosophical, and cultural significance of Cynicism from antiquity to the present. An influential branch of the Socratic tradition, Cynicism was inspired by the radical thought of Diogenes of Sinope, who, living on the streets of Athens in the 4th century B. C., taught that happiness could be found only in a free and autonomous life lived "according to nature" and required the shocking reflection of traditional morality based on shame and social constraint. Cynicism has become the focus of renewed scholarly interest in recent years, thanks to the world of Sloterdijk, Foucault, and Bakhtin, among others.

Industry reviews
"'The Cynics' is an exhilarating contribution to scholarship that will also fascinate a general audience. The Cynics' strange combination of shamelessness and integrity, of shocking behavior and cosmopolitan humanism, has proven perpetually fascinating to philosophers and politicians in the Western tradition. Branham and Goulet-Caze have assembled a sampling of the very best work on the original Greek Cynics and their later followers, providing a first-rate historical and philological introduction that will make the volume accessible to non-specialists in many fields, Read this book if you have wondered whether conventional forms of hierarchy and local group loyalty really express the best of which our humanity is capable--even if you have never considered masturbating in the marketplace, or sleeping in a jar."
Bookjacket - Martha C. Nussbaum

"The contributors to this book trace the cynics' literary legacy through Rabelais, Voltaire, Swift, Nietzsche and many others. Although it is primarily aimed at classicists, it will fascinate many of those who are, unbeknownst to themselves, heirs of the Dog."
