Synopsis
A lot happened to James Brown after the 1986 publication of his first autobiography, THE GODFATHER OF SOUL, not the least of which was a six-year jail sentence. Perhaps reflecting his enforced meditation time, his 2005 memoir, I FEEL GOOD, is both more revealing and more philosophical than his previous effort. Brown's story, encompassing an upbringing in grinding poverty and an adolescence and early professional career battling and outwitting white Southern racists, as well as run-of-the-mill artistic triumph and disaster, is one of the most intriguing and compelling in modern music. Though some of the events described here are eccentric enough to rival his contemporary Elvis Presley (including his claim that the government spied on him through reverse X-ray TV sets), Brown's story is packed with artistic creativity. His musical and social achievements throughout the 1960s include almost single-handedly inventing funk, and averting riots in Boston and Washington after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King; so, when he attributes his 1988 arrest for assault and drug possession to some kind of communication breakdown between him and trigger-happy police, one is inclined to at least give him the benefit of the doubt.
